We are the Resistance. And We are Not Going Anywhere.
Yesterday, the current administration made a devastating decision to remove the United States from the Paris Climate agreement. In a move that will have far reaching environmental, domestic, and international implications, our nation's leadership effectively said, 'we are better in isolation,' than if we unite to tackle a global problem as one world. Today, the incredible responsibility of climate change falls to each and every one of us. Immediately following Trump's decision, California, New York, and Washington State announced a climate alliance. It is unifying actions like this - at the state, municipal, and individual levels - that will be critical going forward.
In this same light, RISE Stronger recognizes that we, the Resistance, are more impactful as a collective, rather than as thousands of disparate organizations. Given yesterday's actions, and the many of other dividing moves this administration has made, our collaboration is more critical than ever. This is why we have launched the United States of Resistance, an interactive directory to connect resistance groups, new and established, across the country. This tool, online at www.risestronger.org/groups, is now available to every organization and all of you. Once complete, the United States of Resistance will allow individuals to find and engage with organizations across the country, and will allow organizations to share best practices and resources, distribute policy and electoral information, and much more.
We invite all of you to take a look, and then we ask that everyone share this resource with resistance leaders in your community. We need the thousands of resistance groups that we have identified (and the many more that we have not), to go online and create or update their custom webpage. Once this is complete, you will be able to search for organizations by issues, actions, and locations, then contact them by email or social media. Together, we know that our collective impact can be monumental.
We've Launched a New Website
We are thrilled to announce the launch of our new website. The new site not only makes getting news and updates easier, it also provides every advocate with the tools and resources needed to be effective and engaged. Here are a few of the new features that we urge you to check out.
1. Our Work. You can view all of our state chapters and policy working groups. More importantly, you can join them - meaning you can get push notifications of their updates, participate in discussions, engage in calls to action, attend meet-ups and more. Remember, you'll need an account with RISE Stronger to do so. Sign up is quick and easy at www.risestronger.org/sign_up (and we won't spam you with emails!)
2. The People's Calendar. This is one of our original tools, which makes locating and attending events, rallies, workshops, meetings, phone banks and more even easier!
3. The United States of Resistance. A brand new feature, the United States of Resistance is a hub for all resistance groups across the country. As groups continue to populate their pages, you will be able to find and connect with groups in your zip, find resources, volunteer your services, and more.
4. Take Action. We have dozens of dedicated volunteers - both operational, as well as state chapter and policy working group leads and members - that help RISE function on a daily and weekly basis. Yet we still need more! You can learn about all of our volunteer opportunities and find ways to get involved with RISE Stronger. Whatever your skill set, we have a place for you.
We hope you will find the new site useful. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.
We will be marching for Truth, tomorrow, June 3. Will you?
This Saturday, people across the country will be joining the #marchfortruth. The March for Truth is taking place as a “call for a fair and impartial investigation, for the pursuit of truth, and for the restoration of faith in our electoral system and the Office of the Presidency." RISE Stronger has called for an independent, fair investigation, and will continue to do so. To find a local march, visit https://www.marchfortruth.info/find-a-local-march/.
The United States Says Au Revoir to Paris Climate Deal. Now What?
The deal, signed in December 2015 by nearly every country, aimed to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, in order to keep the globe's temperature from rising to a dangerous level. The United States, the second largest polluter, committed to reducing emissions by 26-28% by 2025. As of today, we have already reduced emissions by 14%.
Yesterday, Trump announced that America would be leaving the agreement, making good on his campaign promises and aligning with the “America first" message. Important to note, the United States cannot legally leave the agreement until November 2020, following our next Presidential election. Despite this, the US withdrawal in many ways weakens the strength of the agreement. It also has serious implications for US foreign policy, and of course, massive implications for our environment.
States are Stepping Up to form The United States Climate Alliance.
Currently Washington State, New York, and California have joined together. According to a press release, the United States Climate Alliance, “will serve as a way for states interested in dealing with climate change to coordinate." Politico reports that the three states make up about a fifth of U.S. population and GDP, and produce 11 percent of US emissions in 2014. We urge you to call on your Governor to join the Climate Alliance forming right here in the United States.
Don't Forget to Take Action On:
- The National Forensic Science Commission - remember Trump wants to get rid of this in its entirety. You can submit comments through June 9. More info on what to say here, or to comment directly go here.
- Net neutrality - i.e. your freedom to access what you want, when you want, at the same speed and same price. If we get rid of net neutrality, internet service providers (AT&T, Comcast, etc.) will be able to charge you more for various sites, change the speed at which you can access content, and more. Tell the FCC to keep net neutrality. To learn more, click here, and to submit comments directly, click here.
