Congress Keeps the Government Open. What's that Mean? |
|
Congress came to an agreement early this morning hat will fund the government through March 23, to give congressional staff the time to write bigger appropriations bills that would actually fund the federal government, under the parameters set by the new budget caps. Here's what's in the bill, according to CNN. - Short-term funding bill to March 23
- Boosts federal spending for both defense and nondefense programs by $300 billion over the next two years and will suspend the debt ceiling for one year
- $90 billion in disaster aid for Texas, Florida, California, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands
- $6 billion to address the opioid crisis
- 4-year extension of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
- More than $7 billion for community health centers
- $5.8 billion for the bipartisan Child Care Development Block Grant.
- $4 billion towards the Veterans Administration to rebuild and improve veterans hospitals and clinics.
- $2 billion towards research at the National Institutes of Health.
- $20 billion towards infrastructure, including highways, water, wastewater and rural broadband.
- $4 billion toward college affordability programs for police officers, teachers and firefighters.
What does this mean for DACA? It's back to the drawing board. Now Congress will have to take up DACA separately, outside the scope of the budget.
