This is a Public Scoping meeting hosted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regarding a proposal by Holtec International and Eddy-Lea Energy Alliance (ELEA) to build a NEW nuclear waste dump in southeast New Mexico, between Carlsbad and Hobbs, with possible transport on the railroad through Gallup and the Navajo Nation. The application is for 100,000 metric tons of nuclear reactor waste (also called "spent fuel") to be stored "temporarily" for up to 120 years.
This is just the first step in a multi-year process. The NRC will take written comments on the scope of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) until July 30th. They expect the DRAFT EIS to be ready in June 2019.
The public comment period was just extended and 2 more public meetings were added in Gallup and Albuquerque. Please come out to make verbal comments or send written comments before July 30, 2018. IT'S SUPER EASY AND WE CAN HELP!
At this meeting, you will be allowed to give a 3-5 minute public comment on this issue. This is one of the few times that the NRC will hear from the public directly and one of the only chances that the public can give input in person, face to face with the NRC. This is also an opportunity to show your opposition and to say that you DO NOT CONSENT to the storage of high-level nuclear waste in NM or coming through Gallup and your community. This nuclear waste is some of the most dangerous waste on the planet and the most radioactive waste there is. Please come out to this meeting and join us to oppose dangerous nuclear waste being transported across the country and dumped in our beautiful state.
